Woman in Data Science Conference

The Women in Data Science initiative started in 2015 and grew bigger every year since then. Its goal is to inspire and educate data scientists worldwide, regardless of gender, and especially support women in their career paths.

“Attending the Women in Data Science conference organised by Stanford University was truly inspirational. Women in leading roles presented a variety of business ideas – many of which have a substantial social impact. One of the applications of data science that I found particularly interesting was the screening for and early detection of breast cancer. I was surprised by the high accuracy of the ML algorithms that identify pre-stages of cancer with thermal images of women. The AI screening comes with distinctly lower costs than was previously possible, making it accessible for women in developing countries.” (See AI in Healthcare: Cancer to Covid | Geetha Manjinath | WiDS 2021)

“It helped me to get a better understanding of challenging data science projects around the world. It was a whole new perspective for me. In the past, I attended workshops about big data as well. Those workshops, organized by German companies, only focused on maximizing profits and cutting costs in their organizations. That can be a bit dull after a few hours. I liked the change of subject.”
